Welcome to Gateshead Extended Schools
The Extended Schools Team have been working closely with colleagues at Gateshead City Learning Centre to provide an engaging and interactive site that provides important information to schools, students, families and the wider community in Gateshead. The Department for Children, Schools and Families agenda for Extended Schools rollout is well on the way in Gateshead. Through this weblog the Extended Schools Team will keep you up to date with the latest developments in extended services throughout Gateshead and provide information on activities available from schools working in partnership to provide access to a wide range of provision that will have a major impact on the Every Child Matters outcomes within each Extended School Cluster.
Innovations such as RSS Newsfeed will keep you up-to-date with the latest information whilst video feed will display multi-media content and you can post your comments on the site to our on-line comments box.
We hope you find the site a source of interesting and relevant information and we look forward to your feedback.
About Extended Schools
Extended schools are schools that provide a range of services and activities often beyond the school day to help meet the needs of their pupils, families and the wider community. By 2010, all schools are to offer access to the core offer of extended schools. Within Gateshead, extended services are being developed in "clusters" made up of a group of primary schools and one secondary school. The clusters are named after the secondary school in that geographic area. Special schools are also included in their geographical cluster.
Core Offer
The core offer is the minimum requirement of extended services that an extended schools cluster must offer:
- High quality wrap-around childcare
- A varied menu of activities
- Swift and easy access to specialist services
- Parenting support and family learning
- Community access to facilities
Sustainable Change Pilot
Gateshead is proud to be able to say that all of its schools are Extended Schools and are meeting the core offer across their clusters. By structuring the schools into clusters based on traditional links of secondary and primary schools we have been able to develop further, strong relationships which existed as a result of previous partnership working.
As a result Gateshead was one of the first Local Authorities able to say that all their schools were Extended Schools, this was ahead of the government target of 2010.
Clusters are now working hard to further develop the services and activities they offer to their local communities.
Gateshead is working with the Training Development Agency on a project to develop community access to school facilities and to make Extended School provision an integral part of School Improvement Planning, this work will begin in November 2007.
