ContinYou, a community learning organisation, has provided funding to all the schools in the cluster to develop the ‘What’s Cooking Kids?’ project. The aim of the project is for children and young people to have the opportunity to not only learn about cooking healthy food but to also gain valuable life skills and enjoy sharing meal times with friends and other adults.
The programme has trained adults within the schools as Community Food Leaders (CFL) and at Hookergate School eight young people aged between 14 and 18 support sessions as Young Food Leaders (YFL).
The schools have been able to choose to either develop a ‘food’ themed block of work, using information provided by ContinYou, or run cookery clubs where the children have the opportunity to do some hands-on cooking whilst also learning about:
*healthy eating and nutrition
*food hygiene
*food handling
*consumer awareness
At High Spen Primary School 12 children (8 boys and 4 girls) aged 9-11, have taken part in sessions to produce their own ‘healthy snacks. These have included fruit smoothies, vegetable sticks and dips and oat cookies. As well as enjoying the practical preparation, the children have looked at food preparation fact files and the healthy ‘plate’.
Children who took part in the project at Parkhead Community Primary School have produced their own video of the sessions: ‘We love healthy eating’. One of the group believes that the cooking club has been important ….. because children need to understand that as they get older they’re gonna have to start cooking for themselves and it helps them to live a healthy lifestyle’.
