Year 6 is "Moving On!"

Ryton Comprehensive believes that it is very important to prepare all those Year 6 pupils joining the school to feel prepared, re-assured and confident about the change from Primary to Secondary school. That’s why pupils from our Cluster Schools came over to Ryton Comprehensive School to learn about their new school and to learn all about the changes that they will experience.

The school’s Citizenship Co-ordinator, Mrs Hitchenes and the Extended School’s/Transitions Learning Support Assistant, Mr Kelly put on an event for our Cluster school’s Year 6 classes. The “Moving On” events aim was to prepare the students for change, explain why change happens and to re assure our pupils about the myths and rumours that surrounds the move to Secondary school. The four areas of the event focussed on was “Why do we have to move on?”, “How can we prepare for change?”, “What about my friends?” and “Moving on”

As part of the session, all of the groups discussed what changes were and tried to think of changes they have been through and how most changes can involve celebration. Year 6 also conducted a secret vote, where the pupils put the one thing they are looking forward to and the one thing they are worried about Ryton Comprehensive into the ballot box. There were some surprising answers! Most of our future pupils are excited about meeting new friends, learning new subjects like Spanish and I.C.T and joining in the various sports teams and clubs the school has to offer. However, most of our pupils were worried about bullying, losing old friends and whether it was true that they would have their head put down the toilet! (All of which is not true!!) The Cluster Schools; Blaydon West, Crookhill, Emmaville, Ryton Juniors and Greenside met some of our Year 10 Supportive Friends (a Peer Mentoring group) and ask them questions about what the school is like and how they have found the Ryton Comp experience!
