Kingsmeadow Cluster News

WOW! It’s the Kingsmeadow Cluster Magazine!

Schools in the Kingsmeadow Cluster were so pleased about the extended activities they offered, that they wanted to tell the whole community about it! They successfully achieved this aim by producing a colourful community magazine called “What’s on Where” (WOW).

An allocation of funding to the cluster group was used to purchase a colour photocopier, and contribute towards a reprographics worker, to produce the magazine.

The aim of “WOW”, which will be produced 3 times a year, is to inform the public about the wealth of extended activities taking place in schools. It also offers local organisations the opportunity to promote their services. Copies of the magazine are distributed to every pupil in the cluster’s schools to take home, and a number of magazines are left in public places such as libraries and community centres.

The colour photocopier will also be used as a resource for schools and organisations in the area, for printing reports, flyers etc.

Schools in the Kingsmeadow Cluster include: Kingsmeadow Community Comprehensive, Bensham Grove Nursery School, and the Primaries of Dunston Hill, Lobley Hill, Dunston Riverside, St Aidan’s, Eslington, Brighton Avenue and Caedmon.

Active Kidz At Kings Meadow

Active Kidz is a holiday scheme that is ran by the council. It gives children the opportunity to socialize with children there own age and the chance to experience new activities they wouldn't usually have at home, including Arts and Crafts and a mixture of different outdoor activities. The scheme runs for 2 weeks in the Easter holidays and a 5 week scheme in the summer holidays, it is also held at different venues across Gateshead.

Kings Meadow had 26 children on their site that run throughout the Easter Holidays, The age range was over 8s and a lot of sports and games ran throughout. Activities such as rounders, football, tennis and people posters all based around an Easter themed week. There were many trips out on various days to places such as the Alan Shearer Centre, Swimming, Bowling and many more. The children found the 2 weeks fun filled and loved every moment of it.

I really enjoyed going to the Alan Shearer Centre, it was my first time i had been, and the ball pool was the best.
John aged 12

I got to go to the swmming pool on the Tuesday and we all went down the silde even the staff! i love it all.
Sarah aged 11

Activie Kidz from my point of view is a great out of school holiday project which caters for all ages and abilities within the designed ages range. There is an enthusiastic staff team and great site facilities, equipment and choices for the children. The children have the chance to go swimming, Cinemads, Bowling etc, and today we are going to the Alan Shearer Centre. I would recomment Active Kidz to anyone as my son once attended this programme when he was younger.

The Alan Shearer Centre

The Alan Shearer Centre enables people with a disability, and their carers to share leisure time in a setting which provides wide ranging challenge, leisure, relaxation and tehrapeutic opportunities. People can use this as a place to relax and unwind either to stay for a short session or a longer stay, indoors or out. The Alan Shearer Centre is sponsored by St Cuthbert's Care project and is for both Adults and Children with Disabilities.

The Alan Shearer Centre is a brilliant place to get all children involved. It is really stimulating and really promotes healthy living whilst having fun.

Steel Band - Paris

In June, Kingsmeadow Steel Band auditioned to perform at Disneyland and were successful in meeting Disney’s high performance standards required. 28th October was the date given for a 12 noon performance on the Fantasy Stage in Fantasyland. 25 of our students performed—the highest number of performers from our school yet in a performance abroad.

We opened with the apt Carnival de Paris and performed some of our very well known repertoire before closing with All Star—which they all were.

It was commented by Disney that the students performed very well and they really enjoyed our performance. The students were very professional in their performance and really did themselves and the school proud!

Whilst we were in France, the group of 40 students also went up the Eiffel tower before heading back home.

History Trip Belguim and France

On 7th June, 35 Key Stage 3 pupils set off on a trip to France and Belgium. We visited the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium. After a fabulous overnight crossing on the ferry we spent the day exploring the famous sights of World War One and even managed to visit Canada! The Memorial Park that is dedicated to the Canadian troops who fought as part of our army during World War One. The following day we headed into Ypres where the pupils and teachers spent much time browsing and sampling the famous Belgium chocolates. From here we continued onto Tynecot the largest War Memorial Cemetery in the Commonwealth which was a very moving experience for all. Particularly one pupil Lauren Patterson who we believe located her Great Grandfather’s name on the memorial wall. After an exhausting day we headed back to the ferry for more fabulous entertainment. The pupils wowed both the staff and passengers alike with their spectacular dance moves in the disco, strictly come dancing here we come!

Following the success of this trip we are scheduled to take a further 35 students back to Belgium and France between 6th – 10 June 2010 to experience the moving and memorable sights of the World War One Battlefields.
