Ryton Cluster News

An allocation of funding to the Ryton cluster was used to develop elements of the extended schools core offer. In addition to a varied menu of activities the cluster has also been able to create several new post across the schools in the Ryton cluster to assist with supporting the needs of children and transition through the school years.

Picture7.jpg

Ryton cluster has been able to appoint a Senior Learning Mentor to coordinate mentoring, 2 Learning Mentor posts, 2 Learning Support Assistants and a Parental Support Worker. A newsletter will be distributed late in 2008 updating on current activities and outlining the roles of the staff working across the cluster.

The cluster has also developed a close working relationship with the Blaydon Childrens Centre and the associated services that operate and coordinate with the centre.

In 2009 there is provision to continue to develop parent and child classes and several cross-cluster activities are planned.

Year 6 is "Moving On!"

Ryton Comprehensive believes that it is very important to prepare all those Year 6 pupils joining the school to feel prepared, re-assured and confident about the change from Primary to Secondary school. That’s why pupils from our Cluster Schools came over to Ryton Comprehensive School to learn about their new school and to learn all about the changes that they will experience.

Picture1.jpg

The school’s Citizenship Co-ordinator, Mrs Hitchenes and the Extended School’s/Transitions Learning Support Assistant, Mr Kelly put on an event for our Cluster school’s Year 6 classes. The “Moving On” events aim was to prepare the students for change, explain why change happens and to re assure our pupils about the myths and rumours that surrounds the move to Secondary school. The four areas of the event focussed on was “Why do we have to move on?”, “How can we prepare for change?”, “What about my friends?” and “Moving on”

Picture2.jpg

As part of the session, all of the groups discussed what changes were and tried to think of changes they have been through and how most changes can involve celebration. Year 6 also conducted a secret vote, where the pupils put the one thing they are looking forward to and the one thing they are worried about Ryton Comprehensive into the ballot box. There were some surprising answers! Most of our future pupils are excited about meeting new friends, learning new subjects like Spanish and I.C.T and joining in the various sports teams and clubs the school has to offer. However, most of our pupils were worried about bullying, losing old friends and whether it was true that they would have their head put down the toilet! (All of which is not true!!) The Cluster Schools; Blaydon West, Crookhill, Emmaville, Ryton Juniors and Greenside met some of our Year 10 Supportive Friends (a Peer Mentoring group) and ask them questions about what the school is like and how they have found the Ryton Comp experience!

Parent's Coffee Morning

Helen Curry our Cluster Parent Support Worker has launched a weekly parent coffee morning in each of the cluster Primary Schools. Parents are invited to call in and have a chat with each other and are provided with a forum to make suggestions of things they would like to see their child's school implement as well as a chance to voice any issues or concerns.

Picture15.jpg

Other school services such as the school nurse and health trainer have been invited to attend the sessions in order to provide information and strengthen links between parents and the school.

The coffee mornings are a chance to meet Helen the parental Feedback to date has been positive.

Healthwise Event at Ryton

As a school with National Healthy School Status Ryton Comprehensive are always keen to promote the importance of healthy lifestyles.  The "Healthwise" extended schools community event which took place in the main hall on Wednesday 25th March was a drop-in aimed at parents and the wider community to inform and educate about healthy choices. This is one of the key groups for schools to engage with to help attain Healthy School Status.

A variety of Information stands were  on offer including Gateshead young carers, The Amber Project, Ryton Youth Centre and Parentline.  The school nurses and the school showcased our own Healthy School Portfolio and Healthy meal choices on offer for students. Gateshead Health Trainer Jenny Ritson was on site to perform mini body MOTs and give advice around smoking cessation, physical activity etc.

In future similar events may be linked to school parents evenings or open evenings to maximise possible attendance.

Breakfast Club

The Ryton Comprehensive School Breakfast Club is open each school day from 7.50am until 8.25am.

The club offers hot sausage and bacon rolls, toast and cereals, cold sandwiches and pretzels, fresh fruit and yoghurts and a range of hot and cold drinks. Pupils can also use this time to load monies on to their cards and pre-order their lunch-time Grab Bags.

A mid-morning break service is proving a success for those students who take part in lunchtime clubs and activities, as they can have an option of an early lunch.

Create a Robot Activity Day

Ryton Comprehensive School hosted an activity day on 26th May 2009 for families in the cluster to try their hand at building a robot. The event was a near sell-out with over 60 parents, relatives and children in attendance. There was strong competition between the tables as the day went on and a fine array of robots, cars and vehichles emerged at the end of the session.

Claire Percival and Sonia Johnson our School Nurses are based at Ryton Comprehensive and provide a varied public health role within both the Comprehensive and each of the cluster Primary Schools.

Parent and Child Spanish Course at Ryton Comprehensive School

The Parent and Child Spanish course is an opportunity for Year 6 pupils and their parents to have a taster of this interesting and useful language.

The weekly classes are held in the brand new Classroom of the Future at Ryton, where parents and children learn vocabulary and expressions to help build confidence and enable them to hold simple conversations.

Each session builds on the last, introducing new words and phrases at as brisk but manageable pace, with plenty of time to practise. The atmosphere at the sessions is relaxed and friendly, and with half of the course already finished several people are looking forward to using their skills this summer in Spain.
