The Barley Mow Cookery Club is as popular as ever and the Year 6 children look forward to their turn every week. They do not only learn about cookery but about health, safety and hygiene and also the nutritional value of some of the food.

To support pupil's independant learning, Windy Nook Primary School have developed a new initiative called Studdy Buddies, which uses Y6 pupils in peer mentor roles to support Y2 children to carry out additional research during lunchtimes. To read more click on the link below:

Last year seven Gateshead schools benefited from Food Standards Agency funding to run cookery clubs for pupils aged 11-14 years. The clubs catered for the particular interests and needs of the pupils involved, but all covered the main areas of:

Finding sources of funding is an ongoing challenge in the development of services to meet the needs of pupils, families and the local community. The websites below are useful sources of information.
In December 2006 Gateshead Council was specifically invited by the then DfES to join in this prestigious national project focusing on the support offered to children and families when a child first starts school, or moves up to secondary school. All schools were invited to express interest in the project, then, in line with the project guidelines, 50 were randomly selected for participation in this exercise, which we are running in collaboration with the Family & Parenting Institute.
